A soldier of Russia’s National Guard who was assaulted by unknown individuals in Sudzha near the Ukrainian border in the Kursk region has died in hospital, the Investigative Committee reports.

The agency’s chairman Alexander Bastrykin has ordered a criminal investigation.

Nikolay Bykov, 48, is the man in question, Baza says. “A spetsnaz troop was scouring the woods looking for infiltrators yesterday afternoon and was attacked by a group of enemies, most possibly, of four spies.” Bykov was heavily wounded and brought to hospital.
