When I think of Novaya Gazeta, I immediately think of the “little guy” — the ordinary person it is always ready to defend. When women are subjected to domestic violence, their most basic rights are violated: the right to life, the right to health, and the right not to be tortured. It was through Novaya Gazeta that we learned that nearly 80% of women convicted of first-degree murder in Russia were, in fact, fighting to save their own lives.

Novaya Gazeta Europe has bravely continued this difficult work, helping us understand what is happening around us. In times like these, it is even more important than ever to support the work of the newsroom.

I work at a state-owned company, and there is absolutely no support around me. Every day, I am under pressure from censorship, state TV, and pseudo-patriotism. During working hours, I secretly take out my phone and read or watch your news on Telegram or YouTube. And of course, your VPN has been a lifeline. It is the last thread connecting me to the truth and to a community of like-minded people.

Novaya Gazeta is Europe’s most prominent Russian-language independent media brand — a symbol of heroic resistance and absolute integrity. As Oleg Khlebnikov, Novaya’s former deputy editor-in-chief, once said, the problem with this newspaper is not that it is the best, but that it is the only one. In Russia today, its work is effectively impossible. Novaya Gazeta Europe is its direct continuation at a new stage. There is less romanticism in it now, and more severity, but war is war.

Please accept my words of respect and admiration for your editorial team. Your journalism is of the highest calibre. It is such a joy that it has survived — in thought, in ideas, and in your brilliant Russian language. Life is easier with you. It is easier to believe and to hope.

I am from Ukraine. Until 2014, I genuinely saw Russia as a fraternal nation and loved our shared history and culture. Now I have had to tear all of that out of my heart. You are the only Russian-language media outlet I still read and trust.
