The Motion Picture Academy has announced shortlists in 10 categories for this year’s Oscars. Daniel Roher’s film Navalny entered the shortlist.

The film revolves around Alexey Navalny, the leader of Russia’s opposition, and events related to his poisoning, and is nominated for the best documentary feature film.

Moreover, Anastasia, a film about Anastasia Shevchenko, a former activist of the now liquidated Open Russia political organisation, was nominated for the best documentary short film. Shevchenko was sentenced to serve time in prison but managed to leave Russia in August 2022.

Haulout, a short documentary about the issues of the Arctic shot by Yevgenia Arbugaeva and Maxim Arbugaev from Russia’s Yakutia also made the shortlist.

The final list of nominees will be announced on 24 January. The awards ceremony is scheduled for 12 March 2023.
