Over 200 soldiers were killed in the attack by the Ukrainian Armed Forces on an airbase in Russia-occupied Melitopol, where a Russian military base is located, Mayor of Melitopol Ivan Fedorov stated, quoted by regional news agency RIA Melitopol.

“According to preliminary reports, over 200 Russians were eliminated, over 300 were wounded. The city hospital was at capacity. The majority of collaborators are afraid of going back to work,” Fedorov stated.

The Ukrainian army struck the Russian military base in the early hours of 3 July. As a result of the attack, warehouses storing ammunition and fuel, the soldiers’ living quarters and several adjacent buildings were destroyed, Fedorov said. According to him, there are three more Russian military bases currently in Melitopol.

In early June, the occupation governments of Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions announced that local officials had begun to issue Russian passports to Melitopol and Kherson residents.
