Russian shelling of Kharkiv’s city centre has killed five people and injured seven more, Kharkiv mayor Ihor Terekhov has said.

According to Terekhov, a fire broke out in a residential building in central Kharkiv after the shelling. “Rescuers keep reporting casualties — that’s why the number is growing,” he wrote.

Earlier, th Kharkiv mayor reported that a missile had hit a local nursery, while another shell had landed near a five-storey apartment building.

Kharkiv regional governor Oleh Synyehubov also reported the strikes on the city. Four people were injured and nine more were wounded, according to the official.

Synehubov urged residents to take cover, while assuring that emergency services are working at the site of the attack and help is being provided to the victims.
