Finland announces largest-to-date Ukraine military assistance package estimated at €400 million
Finland has announced the 12th defence materiel package for Ukraine estimated at over €400 million, Finland’s Defence Ministry says in a statement.
“Ukraine continues to need support in defending its territory and the current package of defence materiel is clearly the largest one to date. Finland supplies heavy artillery and munitions to Ukraine,” Minister of Defence Mikko Savola says.
The ministry clarifies that the new package “is possible thanks to closer bilateral cooperation between Finland and Sweden”. On 20 January, the two countries plan to sign a bilateral declaration stipulating that Sweden will help Finland as necessary to compensate for the material Finland hands over to Ukraine.
According to the Finnish government’s estimates, the combined value of all defence materiel packages submitted so far is now €590 million.
Earlier today, the US announced a new military assistance Ukraine package estimated at $2.5 billion. Ahead of the NATO meeting at the Ramstein Air Base in Germany, a number of countries announced their arms deliveries to Ukraine: Denmark, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, the UK, France, Poland, Canada, and Germany among them.
