Ukraine attacked by Shaheds, three drones intercepted over two Russian regions

Air-raid sirens sounded in several Ukrainian regions overnight following the detection of incoming Shahed kamikaze drones, the Ukrainian Air Force reported on Wednesday.

The Ukrainian General Staff said that the Russian military had attacked Ukraine with 24 Shahed kamikaze drones, 17 of which it said it had intercepted.

Russia’s Defence Ministry reported that two drones had been downed over the Belgorod region and another over the Oryol region overnight, in what it called a Ukrainian “terrorist attack”.

In the southern Russian city of Sochi, a diesel fuel storage facility caught fire, Krasnodar region Governor Veniamin Kondratyev reported on Wednesday.

It is not yet known what caused the fire.

The fire broke out at around 5:15 AM, with the Mash Telegram channel reporting that locals said they heard explosions before the fuel facility ignited. No official cause for the fire has been disclosed.

Russian foreign minister arrives in New York for UN General Assembly

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has arrived in New York to attend the 78th United Nations General Assembly, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced on Wednesday.

Lavrov is scheduled to address a session of the UN Security Council later on Wednesday where Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is also scheduled to speak, potentially risking a live show down.

During his trip, Lavrov is due to take part in various events with fellow BRICS nations, as well as with members of the Russia-led Collective Security Treaty Organisation, and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation. He is also scheduled to have 20 bilateral meetings, including one with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

Lithuania announces another €500 million in military aid for Ukraine

Lithuania has offered a new military aid package for Ukraine worth €500 million, the country’s Defence Ministry reported on Wednesday.

The package will include detonation systems, maritime surveillance radars and ammunition for the Carl Gustaf anti-tank grenade launcher.

Lithuanian Defence Minister Arvydas Anušauskas also announced that Lithuania would start repairing Leopard tanks allocated to Ukraine in September.
