‘She was no pushover’
Russian feminist activist Anastasia Yemelyanova died in the Turkish city of Erzurum last week after being stabbed. Her boyfriend later confessed to the crime.

On 20 September, the body of Anastasia Yemelyanova, a 32-year-old Russian citizen, was discovered in an apartment in the Turkish city of Erzurum. The police soon detained her 29-year-old boyfriend, Nizar, on suspicion of murder. A few hours later, he confessed to stabbing her in the leg with a glass shard during an argument. His failure to call an ambulance led Anastasia to bleed to death within the next few hours.
“They had a lot of things in common,” Maria, another friend of Anastasia’s, says. “Neither of them could return home due to a war.”
“He always helped her and supported her when she got into trouble. Once when she fell down the stairs and hurt her head badly, he took her to the hospital”.
