It’s day 616 of the war in Ukraine. A Russian drone strike has caused a fire at an oil refinery in the Ukrainian city of Kremenchuk.
A court in Dagestan has arrested 17 people for their role in a pogrom at the region’s main airport on Sunday.
The Klyuchevskaya volcano in Kamchatka has sent a 10-kilometre high column of ash into the air.
Russia drone strike causes oil refinery fire in Ukraine’s Poltava region
The Ukrainian Air Force said that Russian drones had been sighted over the Khmelnytskyi, Kirovohrad and Poltava regions. Air-raid warnings were issued in all three, as well as in multiple other regions overnight.
Poltava Governor Filipp Pronin reported that the Russian military launched multiple drone attacks on the region over a period of four hours. One of the targets hit was an oil refinery in the city of Kremenchuk, which caused a huge fire which was subsequently put out. No casualties were reported.
Close to 10,000 Ukrainian civilians have died since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, the United Nations has said. Some 10 million Ukrainians have been forced to leave their homes and are now either refugees in other countries or internally displaced within Ukraine, the UN said.
Court orders arrest of 17 participants in the Makhachkala airport pogrom
The number of those arrested for their roles in the pogrom at Makhachkala airport in Russia’s Muslim-majority republic of Dagestan has risen to 17. All have been charged with taking part in an unauthorised gathering that interfered with transport infrastructure.
“Of those, eight were sentenced to detention for eight days, and two were given 60 hours of community service due to their health,” the court said.
At least one person was detained for 10 days, and another four were detained for six days. According to the latest figures, security forces have detained a total of 83 people.
Kamchatka volcano spews 10-kilometre high ash cloud
The Klyuchevskaya volcano in Kamchatka has spread a huge plume of smoke into the sky over the peninsula in the Russian Far East, the Kamchatka branch of the Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences announced on Wednesday.
The authorities in two villages have cancelled classes in schools and kindergartens. “Officials are in direct contact with experts and monitoring the situation,” local authorities said.
