Wagner’s Saharan mirage
As Russia scrambles to fend off a surprise Ukrainian offensive, its mercenaries in Africa are faring no better
Christopher Michael Faulkner August 11, 11:40

Late last month mercenaries from Russia’s Wagner Group accompanied the Malian army in what the West African country’s regime called a “stabilisation operation” in the northeastern town of Tinzaouaten, near the Algerian border.
Since the death of Wagner’s leader, Yevgeny Prigozhin, a year ago, Moscow has tried to take over the group’s operations by establishing the Africa Corps.
Wagner’s losses create more challenges than opportunities. Moscow may be on the hook for Wagner’s failures in Africa, especially as it seeks to supplant Wagner with the Africa Corps.
