Religious leaders have not shied away from direct involvement in the war in Ukraine

The Russian Orthodox Church has approved a statement describing Russia’s “special military operation” as a holy war, arguing that all of Ukraine should be Russia’s exclusive zone of influence.
For Azman, opposing the war means not only looking after the material needs of fellow Jews but also resisting Moscow’s efforts to use the memory of World War II and the Holocaust for its own purposes.
For Patriarch Kirill, the war is an opportunity to consolidate sacred and secular power.
